THE JINXED FIELD GUIDE

Jinxed Game Tips: Better Answers & Higher Scores

Keep answers flowing, branch into a smaller topic, and make your one shield count.

Start with answers you can recall quickly

The clock gives you 30 seconds per round. Spending most of that time searching for one unusual word can cost several accepted answers. Begin with valid words you can recall, then move to a more specific group. Three clean answers unlock a 1.25 multiplier for the next eligible answer. A rejected answer has no score penalty, but you still spend time typing it. Common answers are useful building blocks; they are not guaranteed safe, because the House can select answers from every tier.

Use smaller groups to find less obvious answers

Instead of treating the prompt as one enormous list, switch between smaller groups. For fruits, think citrus, berries, stone fruit, then tropical fruit. In this edition, apple earns 100 base points, guava 350, and rambutan 500 before a combo or jinx changes the result. For musical instruments, try strings, woodwinds, brass, then instruments from different regions. These are memory prompts, not guaranteed House-avoidance tricks. The answer bank is curated and finite, and its tiers describe this edition’s difficulty rather than how often people worldwide use a word.

Understand what a clean combo is worth

After three clean answers, the fourth eligible answer earns 1.25 times its base points. For example, a safe 200-point answer then earns 250. Six clean answers make the next multiplier 1.5; nine make it 1.75; twelve reach the ×2 cap. Each new round starts a fresh combo. An unshielded House match earns half the base points and resets the clean streak; it does not remove points you already earned. Invalid words and repeated aliases neither grow nor break the combo. Keep playing after a jinx: a new clean streak can still help your final score.

Save your shield for a deliberate choice

You get one shield across all three rounds, rather than a new one each round. Arm it before an accepted answer when protecting your current combo feels worthwhile. Its next valid, unique answer spends it even if that answer is safe. A shielded House match keeps full combo scoring and continues the clean streak. You may disarm an unused shield before submitting, and invalid or repeated guesses do not spend it. There is no way to know every House pick before the reveal, so the shield is a tactical choice rather than a guaranteed score increase.

Use round recaps to build your own vocabulary

At the end of a round, review your accepted answers and reveal the House picks. The recap also shows three answers to remember. New accepted answers are stored in your local discovery journal, so you can revisit words you found without exposing the entire answer list during play. Discoveries earn 20 XP once per answer in each category; completing a game earns 30 XP. XP, levels, and daily side quests do not add points to the current game. A higher level therefore does not give someone an advantage in a friend challenge.

Choose Daily for comparison and Practice for variety

Daily uses the same prompts and House picks for players on the same game version and UTC date. Replay it to compare strategies under the same conditions, remembering that only the first completion that date adds a streak day. Practice creates a new mix, and Fresh brew avoids all three topics from your previous completed game. When comparing with a friend, share the challenge link after your final round. That link reproduces the prompt order and House picks; scores remain self-reported. Treat the result as friendly competition rather than a verified public ranking.
